Hunting may have been something that had to be done to survive BACK IN PREHISTORIC TIMES, but doing it now for the thrill of it is sick. This violent, I guess entertainment, rips animal families apart and leaves countless animals orphaned, when hunters miss their targets, badly injured. Hunting really pisses me off, personally. I mean I hate the food industry, fur industry, all of it.. but these assholes who hunt and kill just to have trophy pictures or deer heads hung on their walls is sick and not normal.
Quick kills are rare and many animals suffer long, painful deaths when hunter severely injured but fail to kill them. For example, a member of Maine Bow Hunters Alliance estimates that fifty percent of animals shot with crossbows are wounded but not killed. A study of eighty radio-collared white - tailed deer found that of the 22 deer who had been shot with "traditional archery equipment," eleven were wounded but not recovered by hunters. A British study of deer hunting found that eleven percent of deer killed by hunters died only after being shot two or three more times and some wounded deer suffered more that fifteen minutes before dying. Twenty percent of foxes are wounded and are shot again, while ten percent manage to escape.. but starvation is likely, according to veterinarians. Isn't that nice? I would like to shoot these pieces of shit.. and let them roam around for a while and see how it is.
Hunting interrupts hibernation and migration patterns and destroys families. Animals like wolves and geese, who mate for life and live in close-knit units, hunting can devastate entire communities. What hunting is for them.. is what a killer in the night coming in and killing your spouse or child is for you and I. Do you know upset you'd be if you were somewhere and heard gunfire and other commotion that hunters create.. those earsplitting noises cause animals to suffer tremendous stress. This compromises their routine and eating habits, making it hard for them to store the fat and energy that they need to survive the winter. The loud noises can also disrupt mating rituals and can cause parents to flee their dens and nests, leaving their young vulnerable to NATURAL predators.
Hunting is often called a sport as a way to pass off a cruel, needless killing spree as a socially acceptable, wholesome activity. Sports involve competition between two consenting parties and the mediation of a referee, and never ends with the deliberate death of one unwilling participant. Some groups claim that by obeying laws and killing free-range animals in a manner that does not give humans an "improper advantage" over their prey, the activity constitutes "fair chase." These same groups encourage hunters to shoot game with rifles, shotguns, and bows, and arrows - weapons that no animal has a chance of outrunning, let alone fighting. Free range is defined today rarely implies the cast wilderness that large game once roamed.
Hunting has nothing to do with conservation or population control, as some hunters might say - nature takes care of it's own. Many animals are specially bred and raised for hunters to kill. How nice, right? Let's make these babies so we can shoot them later!!!!!!!! The delicate balance of nature's ecosystems ensures that survival of most species. Natural predators maintain this balance by killing only the sickest and weakest individuals. However, hunters strive to kill the animals they would like to hang over their fireplace - usually the largest, most robust animals who are needed to keep the gene pool strong. This "trophy hunting" weaken each species' population. Elephant poaching is believed to have increased the number of tusk less animals in Africa.. in Canada, hunting has caused the bighorn sheep's horn size to fall by twenty-five percent in the lasts 40 years!! So, next time someone tries to argue the facts or hunting is no big deal.. or is done for reasons to help with the population, now you know the truth.
Even when unusual natural occurrences cause overpopulation, still natural processes work to stabilize the group. Tragically, starvation and disease occur, but that is nature making sure healthy, strong animals survive and maintain the strength of their group. Do, there is no need for hunters to come up with that bullshit. After hunters kill the largest members, the offspring of weak adults have difficulty finding food and gaining their strength to survive weather.. so in reality.. hunting causes starvation rather than preventing it.
"Sport" hunting has it's own problems too - for example, the transfer of captive-bred deer and elk between states so that hunters can kill them is believed to have contributed to CWD (Chronic Wasting Disease), a fatal neurological illness in elk and deer that is similar to Mad Cow's Disease. The USDA has given wildlife agencies millions of dollars to "manage" elk and deer populations. Even though it is claimed by the USDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that CWD has no relationship to any similar diseases that affect humans of farmed animals, the slaughter continues.
Taking "toxic" game to non-native environments for hunters to kill is another problem - if they're able to escape and thrive, they pose threat to native wildlife and disrupt already established ecosystems. See where I am going with all of this? NO good comes out of this.
Hunters' intended targets aren't the only ones who suffer. Their accidents can ruin property, and injure or kill cats, dogs, cows, horses, hikers, other hunters, and many other animals! According to the International Hunter Education Association, there are dozens of deaths and hundreds of injuries attributed to this travesty.. and those number only includes humans!
Less than five percent of the US population hunts, but still non hunters are forced to share many wildlife refuges, state parks, national forests, and other public lands with armed individuals who enjoy killing animals. Almost forty percent of hunters in the US slaughter and maim millions of animals on public land each year. Poachers kill just as many animals illegally. Most federal and state agencies are funded in part by hunting and fishing agencies, so agency personnel often go out of their way to encourage these activities rather than regulate or police them.
To attract hunters and their money, these agencies actively recruit children because they know most people will never hunt if they aren't exposed to it in early life. Some agencies have even convinced schools to offer hunting courses to young children. For folks that weren't exposed to hunting at an early age, agencies and special interest groups hold events and support clubs that target people who are less likely to purchase licenses, such as seniors, racial minorities, and women. They also know hunters are more likely to purchase licenses in subsequents if a previous hunt ended in a kill. So, their implement programs are designed to boost the number of "game" species. These programs ensure there are plenty on animals for hunters to kill and revenue from sale of hunting license.
Wildlife agencies are funded by excise taxes on hunting and fishing equipment and revenue from the sale of licenses, hunters who constitute a tiny percentage, enjoy disproportionate say in how wild areas and the animals are managed. Because money talks, Americans who participate in the humane nonlethal activities, such as hiking and bird watching are given little to no roll in decision making.

Hunters who lie and say they kill deer to "control the population" are kidding themselves. The fact that there are 30 million deer in the US despite years of hunting show that killing animals is not an effective way to manage problems. Some wildlife agencies are finally realizing this and are considering other management techniques. Sterilization is an effective, long-term solution to overpopulation. A method called "trap, neuter, and return" has been tries on deer in Ithaca, NY, and an experimental bitch control vaccine is being used on female deer in Princeton, NJ. One Georgia study of fifteen hundred while-tailed deer on Cumberland Isle concluded that "if females are captured, marked, and counter, sterilization reduces herd size, even at relatively low annual sterilization rates.
So, before you support a wildlife or conservation group, ask about it's position on hunting. Some groups, including National Wildlife Federation, the National Audubon Society, the Sierra Club, the Issak Walton League, the Wilderness Society, and the World Wildlife Fund are pro-sport hunting or do not oppose it.. which seems to defeat the whole purpose of supporting wildlife or conservation.
Post "No hunting" signs on your land, join an anti-hunting organization, protest, and spread deer repellant or human hair in hunting areas.
